Il semble que le chat noir colle à nouveau aux pattes de Toyota. Après son échec de 2023, la firme Nippone échoue à nouveau à remporter l'épreuve pour des raisons assez incroyables.
Tout d'abord les qualifications se sont mal passées. Alors quatrième, Kobayashi sort au virage du Karting, provoquant un drapeau rouge qui met fin à la session. Par voie de conséquence, ses chronos sont annulés. Mais, dommage collatéral, ce drapeau rouge interromp l'effort
de Brendon Hartley, sur l'autre GR010 au moment ou il faisait parler la poudre. Résultat: les n°8 et 7 s'élanceront respectivement des 11eme et 23eme places de la grille.
Parties prudement, les Toyota mettront trois heures pour que l'une d'entre elles (la n°8) mène épisodiquement la course. On la retrouvera ensuite aux commandes da façon continue de 1h à 4h du matin, puis durant les 16 et 17 emes heures avant de voir son leadership
âprement contesté par la Porsche n°6 puis la Toyota 7 et la Ferrari 50 tout en restant dans le groupe de tête. Mais alors qu'elle était bien placée pour porter une attaqe décisive la n°8 est envoyée dans le décord par la Ferrari 51 ce qui lui ôte tout espoir de victoire.
La n°7 très légèrement en retrait tente alors le tout pour le tout mais l'arrivée de la pluie complique l'équation, et Lopez, Kobayashi, De Vries devront se contenter de la seconde place.
It looks the bad luck is again working against Toyota expectations. After the fail of 2023, the Japanese brand is not suceeding to win in 2024, due to some extraordinary facts.
First of all, qualifying was a nightmare. Already 4th Kobayashi driving the n°7 is in a flying lap when he crashes in the karting corner, leading to a red flag and ending the session. Consequently, all his lap times are deleted. As a collateral damage, the session was ended when Brendon Hartley was making its hot lap on the
other GR010. As a result, the Toyota n°7 and 8 will start the race from the 11th and 23rd of the grid.
With versatile weather conditions, The GR010 started the race quite cautiousely and 3 hours where needed to see the n°8 leading the race from time to time. It led then continuousely from 1 to 4 a.m. and then during the 16th and 17th hours before having its leadership contested by the Porsche n°6, the Toyota n°7, and later
the Ferrari 50. It was still in the front pack anyway. Racing at very high pace with very good chances to win, the n°8 was then put out of the track around 2 p.m. by Ferrari n°50 denying the Toyota every chance to win. Toyota n°7 just a bit behind made then its effort to take the lead but its attack was thwarted by the rain and
Lopez, Kobayashi, De Vries had to cope with a second place.
