Cette année, les performances entre protos et GT1 sont assez équilibrées. Dès
le départ, les 911GT1 usine prennent la tęte devant le proto Joest (vainqueur 1996) mais sans le distancer.
Les autres (Mc Laren, Nissan, panoz, Courage, Ferrari...) sont largués. Alors que l'on croyait à la victoire
chez Porsche, Bob Wollek sortira une voiture le dimanche matin et la seconde Porsche usine partira en fumée dans l'après
midi. Joest hérite du commandement pour ne plus le lâcher. C'est la deuxième fois d'affilée
que cette voiture (même voiture, même numéro) gagne l'épreuve. Pour Joest, c'est la répétition
de ce qui s'était passé en 84 et 85 où la Porsche 956 n°7 remporta la course deux années de suite
Pour la petite histoire, 1997 marque la première participation (et première victoire) d'un jeune Danois :

This year, the performance between GT and prototypes are quite well balanced. From the start the works 911 GT1 takes the lead
ahead the Joest prototype (1996 Winner) but with no gap. The others (Mc Laren, Nissan, panoz, Courage, Ferrari...) are far behind.
When Porsche believe they could catch another victory, Bob Wollek crash one car on Sunday morning and the other car caught fire in the afternoon.
Joest inherits from the lead and not release it anymore. It is the second time in a row that this car (the same car, the same number) win the event.
For Joest, it is the repetition of what had taken place in 84 and 85 where Porsche 956 n°7 gained the race two following years.
For the footnotes of history, 1997 marks the first participation (and first victory) of a young Dane: TOM KRISTENSEN, we shall talk again of it...
