Partie de la 3eme place sur la grille, la Porsche 919 n°2 se maintenait au 4eme rang dans le même tour que les Toyota 7 et 8.
Mais à 18H30, la Porsche est rentrée dans son stand pour 65 minutes le temps de remplacer le moteur électrique avant.
Repartis 55emes à plus de 13 tours, Bernhard, Bamber et Hartley vont ensuite rouler à fond pendant 19 heures 25.
Les extraordinaires rebondissements de cette course folle aidant, la 919H n°2 se retrouve bonne seconde à midi, n'ayant devant elle que l'Oreca du
Jackie Chan DC Racing, une LMP2 qui lui rend plus de 10 secondes au tour...
Peu avant 14 heures, la Porsche s'empare du commandement et franchi la ligne d'arrivé en vainqueur avec 1 tour d'avance sur l'Oreca.
En 1977 Jacky Ickx, Hurley Haywood et Jurgen Barth avaient réalisé presque le même exploit en imposant leur Porsche 936 face aux Renault Alpine.
"Les derniers seront les premiers" va t'il devenir un proverbe à Stuttgart ?
Third on the grid the Porche 919H n°2 was cruising 4th in the lap of the Toyotas when it was stopped with front electrical engine failure after 3.30 hours of race.
It took to the pit crew 1H05 to fix it.
Now 55th more than 13 laps behind, Bernhard, Bamber and Hartley will drive then pedal to the metal during 19 hours and 25 minutes.
Helped with the amazings developpements of the race, the Porsche n°2 find itself second overall at noon, with only the n°38 Oreca Gibson of the Jackie Chan DC Racing team,
a LMP2 car more than 10 seconds slower per lap...
A bit before 2 p.m. the 919H overtook the Oreca and took the chequered flag as a winner, 1 lap ahead the Oreca.
In 1977, Jacky Ickx, Hurley Haywood and Jurgen Barth made a similar coming back, wit their 936 Porsche against the Renault Alpines. Will "Lasts wil be firsts" be a motto for Porsche ?
